A Love Letter to Aberdeen

Dearest Aberdeen,

Oh, how I've missed you.  I remembered what you looked like, but had somehow forgotten what you sounded like, smelled like, and, best of all, how exactly you made me feel. I didn't think I'd missed your misty rain that's enough to ruin your hair but not enough to really need an umbrella...but I did. I didn't think I'd missed your uneven cobble-stoned streets that are sometimes hard to walk on...but I did.  Being here reminds me of so many happy times - not even crappy weather can ruin this mood.

As my incoming flight parted through the clouds and I saw your lights like strings of orange Christmas lights lining the coast and major streets, my heart literally skipped a beat.  Up until that point, I think I was mostly focused on leaving Sweden. But the moment I saw those lights, my brain switched gears. I was no longer sad about leaving Sweden; I was excited about seeing you. As we touched ground and the intercom switched on with a cheery "This is your captain speaking. Welcome to Aberdeen", I grinned at the thought of re-discovering your beauty.

Seeing Alex's friendly face greet me at the airport was something I'd been long awaiting. Our goodbye at the end of my year here was so rushed and so rubbish, I just knew we had to meet again.  After 3 (albeit wonderful!) weeks of spending time with pretty much strangers, it was just so nice to see a friendly face to welcome me back to memory lane.  She's just the same as I remember her - hilarious, easy-going, and down right beautiful. I haven't stopped smiling since the moment I arrived.  If smiling is good for your health, then everyone should have an Alex.

I simply cannot describe how much I've missed her!
I love that you always have new things to show me! I discovered one of your churches yesterday, with Alex, her boyfriend Ash, and his housemate, Ian.  It was cozy, and the people were beyond nice.  It was so great to have a congregation that sings so loudly. I followed along and felt like part of their church family!  I spent the rest of the day relaxing, discovering the new library on campus (so refreshing!) and catching up with Alex.

Doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the founded-in-1495 university grounds, but its  AWESOME !

For supper, I rediscovered your city centre. I met up with Mia, and we went on a long walk to a Chinese restaurant, where we had a chance to catch up over supper. We each tried to summarize the most exciting parts of the past 2 years, I passed on some Swedish tips (since she left today for Stockholm!), and we ate to our hearts desire. Afterwards, we found a place for dessert and sadly said our goodbyes a few hours later.
The beautiful new-hair-coloured Mia!

Your streets are so familiar,  my feet somehow knew just how to get around.  I couldn't help but smile as I walked through campus yesterday and saw not only the familiar buildings, heard the Scottish accents, and saw the wild daffodils, but felt comfortable, like I was at home.  And I don't just mean a little inner grin to myself. I was bearing a great big, tooth-bearing, beaming memory-filled smile.

Talk about a walk down memory lane...*sigh* You da best, G Block.

Thank you for staying the same for me, Aberdeen. I knew you'd wait for me to come back!

All my love,

Becky

I had forgotten how lovely it was to have the daffodils growing wild and free - definitely one of the things I miss about spring in Aberdeen!
