Me: I'm thinking of going to this 'Love Stinks' party on Thursday for Valentine's Day, but I only very recently realized that I'm the ONLY single person I know in the entire city.
Mom: What? Why? Are you kidding me? Get on that!
How heartbreaking. I'm starting to think my marital status is not my fault, but rather the fault of the men. I mean I'm a young, intelligent, multi-talented, kind, musical, friendly and quite frankly HILARIOUS person with a decent job. Oh, and did I mention humble?
Whatever the reason, so comes my 23rd Valentine's Day, in less than 48 hours, with nothing more planned than a date with my tv, a cup of tea, and a bag of popcorn once again. If I were in a relationship, I doubt I'd have anything exciting planned on such an overpriced, commercially-capitalized holiday anyway, but it would at least be nice to share the popcorn with someone. Not much is worse than watching rom-coms that pretend life and romance is all rainbows and sunshine, while moping about the fact that I'll likely retire to be that old lady who feeds the pigeons instead of having real human relationships. Then again, maybe there is something worse than moping...like a Pity Party at a bar full of desperate single people. The lesser of two evils? I guess we'll see how I'm feeling on Thursday night. It's times like this I miss living with Keena and Achan the most - I'm sure we'd have either hilarious blind dates or disgusting amounts of bulk candy and chocolate on the calendar.
Wow, that was depressing. Sorry, folks. I guess that's what the season of love does to single people like me, when paired with a stressful workload and 8:45am sunrises (still!).
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on a second. Who am I kidding? Being single definitely has it's perks. For example, I don't have to spend ANY money at this time of the year, OR worry about feeling guilty if I don't spend any and someone else spends something on me. WIN. I can do what I want, when I want, and have all the 'me' time I want or need. I can travel and get up and go whenever I want, for as long as I want, and focus my time on family and friends who will likely be around longer, anyway. And, I can shamelessly ogle any tv/movie star I like. Like this beautiful man from my new favourite show, Girls.
HURRAH, HURRAH! WHO NEEDS A MAN!? I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAAAAARRRR! Liz Lemon, one of my heroes, explains it well here:
On a brighter note, however, I missed the wrath Nemo (the storm, not the adorable animated fish), which seemed pretty horrible for all my southeastern Ontario friends and family. As much as I'd like to sympathize with you, I think this is the first time in history that I've been away from home and actually had the more favourable weather, so I need to brag a little bit. And hey, most of you got a snow day, anyway.
I also sent in my passport renewal forms today. Mission Don't-Look-Like-A-Drugged-Up-Ex-Convict-This-Time - SUCCESSFUL! Especially given the fact that you're not allowed to smile, (and ignoring the oddly misplaced hair that the photographer so kindly didn't point out), I'm actually pretty happy with it. I'm pretty sure it'll be cropped quite a bit closer in the actual document, anyway. Any chance you can substitute passport photos for drivers license ones?
What else is new?
-I ate pancakes for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner today (that might be a first!)
-Speaking of Lent, I'm giving up beer. I was going to give up all alcohol, but I always feel a little resentment that my birthday is always during Lent, and I feel that should be a Get-Out-of-Lent Free card. I don't think Jesus works that way, though.
-Speaking of Jesus/church/Lent, I saw this today in light of the pope's resignation that made me giggle:
-I'll be happy when festival and spring concerts are over (ie not for a long few months yet). Blerg.
-I recently got a new piano student or two, which is exciting (teaching privately is definitely a highlight of my week!)
-Lastly, I'm off to Edmonton this weekend! Yay! Another capital city I can say I've been to other than in the airport. Mission Alberta: almost completed.
-Plans for the summer/spring break are still up in the air. Any suggestions and most visitors are welcome.
Until Next Time,
B.
