[hahaha I bet you thought this post was going to be in green font/background, didn't you? Well if I had thought of the title before I wrote it, maybe it would have been...anywaaaay...]
Oi!
Wanna know something sad? (Of course you don't...). Well, I'm telling you anyway. THEY DON'T HAVE LIFESAVERS HERE! Well, I'm sure they have the floating, orangey-red kind on boats, and the muscular-built lifeguard types....but I'm talking candy, here. They don't have lifesaver candy.
I bring this up because I used lifesavers as a prop yesterday and today for pictures I've been taking for the upcoming photography society competition -- which I'm not expecting to win, not in the least, but I'm just entering because I'm eager to get some non-biased feedback from educated photographers and beginners alike. For this competition in particular, the theme was "Green", like I said before, and here's a few of the ones I'm thinking of submitting:
What do you think? I'm trying to edit them a bit, like cropping and adjusting colour balance and stuff, but that's what I have so far. I was trying to get "green" in its different connotations, like how it can be related to nature, or to being environmentally friendly, or to the colour green, etc. I know there's problems with focus, because I still don't know how to control my camera properly to get it to do what exactly I want it to do. But this is what I have for now. One day I'll learn how to use a DSLR and buy one and be happy. One day, friends. One day.
Other than that, I've been getting more comfortable in second term. I know it's only been one week and 0 classes since the last time I posted about it, but I'm absolutely LOVING my aesthetics course (I felt it needed mentioning again) and my lessons are going swimmingly. I'm getting more comfortable in my french class (Oui oui! C'est vrai!), and actually participating more, which is a plus, even though I get teased for being Canadian and APPARENTLY having a Quebecois accent. Thank you for pointing that out, amazingly-gorgeous T.A. I also finally got a response about volunteering with Girl Guides, so hopefully that will start out this week! I can't wait! :) I don't care if you think its pointless or nerdy or anything, Guiding is amazing. It teaches young girls social skills, life skills, outdoor skills, and gives them so many opportunities to reach out to their community and explore the world -- as cheesy at it sounds, it's true. I went to Mexico and Switzerland with them and that's a huge part of the reason why I have the travel bug (and probably will have it until I die). I was pretty embarrassed on the phone, though, when the leader of the unit was asking me questions that I didn't always entirely understand...partly because of the thick (and when I say thick, I'm talking molasses-thick) Aberdonian accent, and partly because of my phone reception in my room. Nevertheless, I'm stoked to start with them!
Also starting up this term are coach-less trombone quartet rehearsals -- the first of which we just had last night and I think it went pretty well! The fact that it ended with 1) a trip to the Bobbin, 2) a few drinks (more than a few for some unnamed members who will likely be reading this in the near future), and 3) one very hilarious 4tet-mate ending the night in high-pitched yelps and a bra-fitting (don't ask); probably just made it that much funnier to look back on. But, you know what they say -- those who drink together, think together; and thinking together is an important part of a nutritious breakfast successful trombone quartet (well I don't know if they say that....I just made that up now....but it seems to make sense, right?)
Hmmmmm....quoi d'autre?
I'm still not sure what I'm doing about Easter... my original plans of visiting friends in Poland and Germany fell through (which makes me feel like this -->
), and now I feel like it's last minute and I'd be intruding on anyone who I ask...but regardless of what ends up happening, I'll be getting out of the city, doing some kind of traveling, and squeezing every last drop out of this sponge I like to call my year abroad. Alone or accompanied. Rich or poor. This girl will not be held back! WHOOP WHOOP! (which makes me feel like this -->;
)

)I'm also thinking about the upcoming Lenten season and what I'll give up...mostly so I can get my 40-day fill now! hahahaha Any suggestions? My sister once gave up facebook for Lent. But she's clearly mad, so I probably won't be doing that. I mean, it's not that I couldn't do it. It's just that, you know, there are some legitimate reasons why facebook is useful. Like knowing upcoming events. And getting reminders of stuff for classes, concerts and other legitimately important things. And knowing when people's birthdays are. And getting in touch with people quickly and showing them cool youtube videos. ESPECIALLY since my msn isn't working. What do you want me to be, a recluse? You want my only human contact to be face-to-face? Might as well tattoo "Antisocial Canadian" on my forehead. Being social is no longer defined by human face-to-face contact. To be social these days, you have to be connected 24/7; online, through cell phone calls and texting, the list goes on!
Thus, as I have so clearly demonstrated, giving up facebook would threaten my already-quavering social status, invite the forgetting of birthdays and events, and furthermore guarantee a VERY long and uninterrupted series of hours of catching up when I return to the networking system we all know and love when Easter is finally here and Lent is over.
Also, soon to come is Sima and my trip to Stirling! Cannae wait! (see what I did there?)
OH! I know something that is note-worthy! Today was SUNNY! That may not seem like a big deal for you Kingstonians (or for my lovely friend Danielle who's in freakin' AUSTRALIA) but honestly...sun is a big deal here! I whole-heartedly believe that a large reason why I was so stressed over some things last term was because I was depressed due to lack of sun. I've been taking new vitamins, courtesy of a very natural/herbal remedy-aware aunt of mine, and they are working WONDERS. It's also a fun game I get to play with myself because my vitamin D chewable vitamins taste like chocolate, and my vitamin C taste like orange...so it's like every morning I get to eat a chocolate orange!
Yea, my life is awesome.
Until next time,
Beckers
P.S. ITS OLYMPIC WEEEEEEEEK!!!!!

P.P.S. I don't know what is going on with the background colour being finicky. I give up.
